Jaclyn Lee
My immigrant parents always stressed the importance of minimizing waste, recycling, and reusing whatever we could—and to be grateful for the clean air and the four seasons of New England. I remember repurposing everything from tin containers used for egg-roll cookies to store my crayons to altering milk jugs to hold the blackberries we would pick in the summer. To this day, those values still hold true.

When I began my career as a structural engineer, much of my focus was on design. Today, it’s still about design but also about reducing the embodied carbon and making a lasting environmental impact. When HOK signed onto the SE2050 Challenge, I was given the opportunity to lead our firmwide efforts to reduce embodied carbon across all our projects and reach net zero carbon by 2050. In my day-to-day, I collaborate with our architects, contractors, and engineers to ensure that we conduct at least one Life Cycle Assessment on every new HOK building project. This, in turn, informs our internal carbon database and benchmarking efforts from which we measure our embodied carbon reductions.

What interests me most about this work is our integrated approach towards a common goal. I like to challenge my peers to think beyond code requirements and cost efficiencies and be more intentional with our designs so that, together with other firms in our industry, we can make a positive impact on the planet.

My 25-year journey at HOK has seen me grow from a junior architectural technician to operations leader for the London studio. People ask me how I’ve stayed at one company for so long. The answer is simple: HOK’s diverse range of sectors and project typologies keeps it fresh and interesting. Here you have the ability to change your path to suit your own preferences. You can move sideways, between different sectors, and upwards—with the help of amazing mentors—to seek new challenges and opportunities.

Basically, if you have the ambition, passion and drive to develop your skills and grow your career, HOK will support you. I have worked on and managed large and influential projects across the world. I’m proud of my achievements to date at HOK and looking forward to many more to come!
Kristina Kamenar
HOK is a firm that recognizes talent, hard work and a passion for design. In my seven years at HOK I’ve risen from a designer to senior designer to senior project designer and—most recently—to director of the Canadian Interiors practice. I didn’t accomplish it alone.

My HOK mentors have propelled my success. Through them I’ve learned about teamwork, leadership, empathy and design excellence. Now, as a leader myself, I’m passionate about mentoring and providing others with opportunities to grow their careers and fuel their passion for design.
Keith Hui
I’m an “HOK boomerang” i.e., an employee who leaves HOK only to return. My experience at HOK has spanned three offices on two continents and includes a gap of six years in which I worked for two other large design firms.

What led me back to HOK were the consistency in design quality, collaborative environment, and trust it places in its employees. Although a large firm, HOK has an entrepreneurial spirit that allows people to chart new paths that grow their careers and—in so doing—grow HOK. For me, that has meant helping launch HOK’s Seattle office in 2008 and then pursuing a dream of mine to work internationally in Hong Kong for four years before returning to the U.S. to help grow our Texas practice.

After a six-year hiatus with other firms, I’m now back in my hometown of Seattle and couldn’t be happier to rejoin my original HOK team. It’s both familiar and new, and I’m excited to see where we take it next.
