WATCH INTRODUCTION
One of my favorite things to do each year is to help put together the HOK Design Annual. This gives us an opportunity to reflect on the work we've done in the past year and take a closer look at the best work that has come out of our studios around the world.
— Bill Hellmuth, FAIA, LEED AP
Chairman + CEO
This year, for the first time, we have created a digital-only Design Annual. We've learned a lot about communication and collaboration while working remotely and thought a digital edition could reflect that while reaching a wider audience. The videos and animations also enhance our project stories.

It didn't take us long to determine what our theme for this year's annual would be: Sustainability. In 2021, as designers help clients respond to the pandemic, the climate crisis and the much-needed push for equity, sustainability in all its forms—environmental, social and economic—is paramount. We looked at each project presented in this Annual through those three distinct lenses of sustainability.

We also used the AIA Framework for Design Excellence to examine each project. This goes beyond aesthetics and assesses each project through 10 performance measures. With so many needs in the world, and so many things designers can do to help, it's critical that we focus on these measures and overall sustainability in all our work.
