Creating an art installation for the Seattle Design Festival is an annual tradition for HOK’s Seattle studio. For this project, the team partnered with Arup, Hoffman Construction Company and Valley Electric. The team’s creative mission to highlight a mesmerizing world resulted in a moment in time that fostered the discovery of new perspectives through light, joy and social curiosity.

Creating a Moment in Time

The design team sought to create a dynamic structure that would allow festivalgoers of all accessibility types and ages to reflect on their personal meaning of social curiosity and introspection. The lucid shape mirrors fluctuating thoughts, human emotions and the immediate surrounding natural environment.

The materials leveraged a metal skeleton and dichroic plastic, known for its flexible structure and color-shifting properties. As light passes through the plastic, it refracts into a spectrum of colors, transforming the environment and engaging viewers’ senses. The transparency of the plastic speaks to individuality and community connection. These materials were selected to foster an immersive, multisensory experience, inviting participants to explore and interact with the art in a constantly changing, vibrant space.

Collaborative Construction

The construction of Inside-O-Scope was a collaborative effort highlighting the installation’s theme of shared exploration. From design to engineering to construction, each team member contributed unique skills and perspectives, working together to overcome challenges and bring the vision to life.

This collective process embodies the installation’s message: Just as the team transcended individual limitations through collaboration, visitors were invited to engage in a shared journey of curiosity and discovery, uncovering new dimensions alone and together. The teamwork behind the creation of Inside-O-Scope reinforces the idea that collective effort can transform ordinary experiences into extraordinary moments of connection and wonder.
