John Neary AIA, LEED AP
John leads the Facade practice group at HOK. Based in New York, the group is engaged with projects across all HOK regional offices and practice areas. A project designer and technical specialist, John works closely with owners, design teams, consultants and builders to ensure the delivery of beautiful, high-performance facades. John’s detailed sketches and visual thinking help teams find solutions to even the most complicated design challenges.
A passionate designer, researcher and collaborator, John has led studies and presented papers on a variety of facade topics, including:
- Structural skin and embodied carbon (with HOK’s structural engineering practice)
- Timber curtain wall code issues, daylight and energy use (with Arup Fire Engineering)
- Developing structural terra cotta mullion prototype (with Boston Valley Terra Cotta, Gartner/Permasteelisa and TriPyramid Structures)
- Creating a tensioned wall system prototype (with HOK, Oldcastle Building Envelope and TriPyramid Structures)
John has taught technical and design studios throughout his career. He currently leads a fourth-year studio on high-rise facades and net-zero energy at the New York City College of Technology and recently served as a studio adviser to the fourth-year comprehensive studio at Syracuse School of Architecture. John is an active member of the Facade Tectonics Institute and serves on its Special Advisory Committee.
