HOK’s integrated team of workplace strategists, interior designers and experience designers transformed Graphic Packaging International’s headquarters into a dynamic global hub that reinforces the company’s leadership in sustainable packaging innovation. Through a lease agreement facilitated by Cushman & Wakefield, Graphic Packaging expanded from three to nine floors, transforming a traditional office building into an immersive brand experience.
The workplace connects to Graphic Packaging’s existing warehouse and machinery fabrication shop where the company designs and builds the equipment used to produce its breakthrough packaging solutions.
The “Raw and Refined” design concept draws inspiration from Graphic Packaging’s core process of transforming raw paperboard into sophisticated packaging. Industrial elements blend with warm, natural materials and precise detailing, creating an inviting space for office workers, factory employees and clients from around the world.
At the heart of the headquarters is the Experience Center. Here, interactive exhibits showcase Graphic Packaging’s legacy of designing and patenting consumer packaging and machinery. Above the open stair hangs the Experience Center’s signature feature: 2,700 translucent green leaves, each etched with a unique patent number to quantify the long legacy of packaging products and the company’s prolific industry influence meant to grow over time as new patents are developed. The Center also includes:
- A retail display that shows Graphic Packaging’s packaging in use
- Live video feeds from Graphic Packaging’s global factories
- A working prototype lab
- An operational Graphic Packaging machine showing how packaging is made sits next to a rotating interactive display recognizing patent designers
The space prioritizes well-being and flexibility, with unique break rooms on each floor and new fitness and dining facilities. Each floor features a large-scale brand installation crafted from recycled materials commonly used at Graphic Packaging International to reinforce their commitment to sustainability. Custom wallcoverings with embossed patent drawings celebrate the ingenuity of Graphic Packaging employees.
