Following a merger with a local law firm, MLT Aikins needed more space to accommodate its growth. The firm engaged HOK to design the renovation of a new floor in its existing building, located in Vancouver’s Central Business District.
The design team faced several challenges: creating a sense of connection and cohesion between floors, achieving the desired aesthetic and working within a tight budget.
HOK explored various scenarios to retain existing partitions without compromising MLT Aikins’ program requirements. Ultimately, the team determined that a more comprehensive renovation would better serve the client’s needs and provide long-term flexibility.
The design incorporates an airy, daylight-filled café space along the perimeter. This multifunctional area offers stunning city views and alternative workspaces. A kitchen counter artfully crafted from jade pays tribute to the office’s locale while adding a touch of authenticity.
Employee wellness was a priority for HOK’s redesign. Key features include:
- Perimeter offices and meeting rooms with full-glass fronts to maximize daylight
- Ergonomic workstations and offices with sit-stand desks and new task chairs
- A solarium room with biophilic elements and unique artwork by emerging local artists
- A dedicated wellness room for staff to relax
- A barrier-free shower room for bike commuters
The redesigned space balances function, wellness and aesthetics. It’s a cohesive, inviting environment where MLT Aikins’ staff and clients can work effectively and feel at ease.
